On accessibility
With Notorious Style, we tried to make the PDF a lot more accessible than ZIMO's Getting up in a few different way
Jargon
One of the most difficult task is to find the right words, the right verbiage.
On one hand trying to keep some of the accurate terms, but on the other trying to avoid a series of jargon that end up meaningless to the neophyte.
Even with a glossary at the end, removing some jargon is an important way to make the rules more accessible.
Unlike the few sentences above, the english level required (eg. as a foreign english reader), was already made to be accessible.
Size
The PDF 4 times smaller than before. An while storage may not necessarily matter a lot in 2024 for most, it does a great deal if your device is not brand new with no data on it.
Speed (Layers)
The old PDF had loads of layer, and they were not squashed, which means it was rendering all the layers successively when moving about the PDF. It is fun the first few times to see a page build up, but it gets old quickly and is simply in the way of playing the game when you just want to go back and forth.
Visual Accessibility
Here there is a lot about a lot. We started at the bottom of level of accessibility and it was probably even a bit dificult to parse for people with the best visual abilities.
Now, with a reduce palette, a layout that is not purposefully confusing, and colours that should have a good contrast, the pdf is just better.
It probably work well in B&W too.
A work in progress
There is still a lot to do, the Text-To-Speech(TTS) engine are not reading things in order, and I think our titles are not titles, just big fonts, which doesn't help the TTS to find the right place. Even with that fixed, a better solution would be still be to have an extra audio book format for the rules.
Things I know are worth doing and we might not have done yet are image descriptions.
I didn't check all the different colour blindness views, so that needs to be nailed as well
What else is missing ?
This Devlog barely scratches the surface, what else is not covered here that you think makes a rule book more accessible?Files
